UK Unveils Futuristic Laser Weapon in Groundbreaking Test
A cutting-edge laser weapon with unlimited ammunition has been tested on British soil for the first time.
Soldiers from the British Army’s 16 Royal Artillery conducted the historic trial earlier this week at Radnor Range in central Wales.
Mounted on a Wolfhound, a protected troop transport vehicle, the unnamed weapon successfully destroyed multiple drones in mid-air, sending a stark message to Britain’s adversaries.
According to the Ministry of Defence (MoD), a single blast can eliminate airborne targets in seconds.
The laser operates by focusing a powerful beam of infra-red energy onto its target, using advanced tracking systems that ensure real-time precision and lock-on.
Unlike traditional munitions, the laser weapon boasts virtually limitless ammunition.
“Every test we’ve conducted has removed a drone from the sky,” said Warrant Officer Matthew Anderson of the British Army’s Mounted Close Combat Trials and Development Group.
“We’ve tested different ranges, speeds, and altitudes, but the consistent factor is how swiftly a drone is neutralized. This is a capability that could enhance our battlefield arsenal.”
Stephen Waller, of the MoD’s Defence Equipment and Support agency, highlighted the growing use of drones in warfare, as seen in Russia’s conflict with Ukraine. He confirmed the lasers would offer UK soldiers a “decisive operational advantage.”
Minister for Defence Procurement Maria Eagle praised the technology, emphasizing its role in keeping Britain at the forefront of military innovation.
“The successful testing of this laser weapon system marks a significant milestone in advancing future defence capabilities and reflects British engineering excellence,” she said.
